ICI 500, Our Big and Valuable Brand...

As Istanbul Chamber of Industry, we experienced the proud of sharing the 2019 results of “ICI-Research of Top 500 Biggest Industrial Institutions of Türkiye” that we have been presenting to the public for 52 years constantly with the public once again last month even if it’s late because of the Covid-19 pandemic that continues to impact our lives in a negative direction unfortunately.

ICI 500 received the expected interest by companies, academy, media and economy world and put forward its size and value once again. Our research points out that industrial giants have challenging and solution-requiring problems as much as they have positive and promising aspects for the future.

If we need to mention about two results of ICI 500 firstly, we can say that the most important of these two is the results regarding the technology that you can read about in the following pages. Briefly, I need to say that the share of both medium-advanced and advanced technology-focused industries within the added value created has been consistently increasing for the last three years. The second is that the expenses that our industrialists have made for R&D are increasing.

There are some data that have been put forward by ICI 500 regarding our industrial institutions and that we need to consider. First of these is the financial indicators. Unfortunately, it is hard to say that we are experiencing an improvement regarding such indicators in this year as well. In the debt/equity structure of ICI 500, we see that the deterioration which has attracted attention for the last five years maintains its existence in 2019.

It is undoubtedly useful to evaluate 2019 which is the year covered by ICI 500 that we have evaluated with our valuable academics and consultants in July Assembly Meeting within its own dynamics. 2019 was a year when extraordinary developments were experienced in the global economy for the industrialists. While commercial protectionism increased throughout the year, Brexit impacted Eurozone economic activities in a negative direction throughout the year. In domestic scale, we should take into consideration the local elections held on 31 March and repeated Istanbul elections. Negative impacts of the election which spread through the half of the year on the economy should be considered.

On the other hand, our industry sector maintained its contribution to our economy in a strong way by overcoming the difficulties in a particular level in 2019. Especially with its strong growth performance by approximately 6 percent during the third quarter towards the end of the year, it played an important role for our economy to stay in the positive growth path.

During such challenging days when the world itself struggle against an unprecedented crisis, I strongly believe that our industry will successfully overcome this challenge by being strengthened. I hope that the 2019 ISO 500 study will guide our economic activities.

As ICI, our mission is to produce solutions for the industrialists and bring them together with the stakeholders in a solution-oriented manner while experiencing such a challenging period. We brought the members of ICI Profession Committees and the officials of the Revenue Administration of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance together during the last month. Mr. Bekir Bayrakdar, the Head of the Revenue Administration of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance and bureaucrats of the Ministry as well as 38 Professional Committee representatives of the ICI attended and negotiated in the meeting where the current tax related issues of our industry were addressed and consulted.

I would like to state that our solution-oriented meetings regarding the important subjects which constitutes the agenda of the industry will continue to be held in the following days.

Hereby, I hope the Eid-Al-Adha which has a meaningful place in our spiritual world and we will start to experience from the first days of August brings you love, peace and happiness and especially health for the humanity.
